Kathleen Edwards' "Change the Sheets" reminds me of one of those songs you put on when you're going for a long drive. Something has changed in your life: a break up, a lost job, the end of a friendship, the end of an old way of thinking or an old habit; a new chapter. At this time all you want to do is, like Kathleen says, run run run run run. But instead you drive and drive, just you, the moonlight & your shed skin behind you; a closed chapter behind as you come to terms with how to move forward. It's one of those tracks that tells of a change of scenery in your life. A change that will do you good. And sadly, this is another track you'll probably never hear on the airwaves.
"Here is the truth, I swear it used to be fun. Go ahead run run run run…"
“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.”

The perfect summer song
We're in December and it's a long way to summer, I know. But where have I been that I haven't heard of this Washed Out dude before? But I'm glad I was made aware of him recently :) Check out his other songs. Very lazy-summer-dayish.

Down on Life but with an upbeat vibe
The words tell of trouble but the beat to this song is so dope you can't help but move and sing along. To me it's one of those nice earworms. Elliphant is dope. I love her style, her sound, her accent and I love that reggae vibe of this track. Can't wait to see more of her work.

Psychic Twin!
Speaking of underground bands doing their thing in Brooklyn, let me introduce you to Psychic Twin. Discovered them at a warehouse party in Williamsburg last year and since then I've been hooked. I just love her voice. She's one of those artists I wish the whole world could know about yet not, because I want to be only one of the few who knows and appreciates her sound. You know how it is.
Anyway, enjoy.

Let's go to Brooklyn
Heard of Kudu in 2007 but honestly I forgot about them until the other day, when a melody for this song started playing in my head. I was serendipitously reintroduced and now I'm smitten again. And they're Brooklyn-based which is hella cool! :)

Three Times a Fool
Because I love you so ... How many times have we all been there?
Otis has turned me into a blues girl. And I'm so glad! I play his station on Pandora almost every day and I'm always taken aback by the sheer talent of all these blues guys. I must make it to New Orleans one day and just sit in one of those smoky bars while grooving to some music with real soul.
I love this version of Three Times a Fool. I can just feel that guitar in my bones. Great stuff.

Listen to this with headphones on
In love with this song. Heard it one day in Forever 21 & instantly Shazamed it. It often pops up in my head, unbidden, and then I have to seek it out. It's dark and downright awesome.

Sugar Man
If you haven't heard of Rodriguez, prepare to be amazed.
Sixto Rodriguez made music during the 70s but was never heard of in the U.S. If you were to ask anyone at that time if they knew a musician by that name, they'd say no. But Rodriguez wasn't lost to another part of the world - South Africa. Unbeknownst to him, his music inspired many people there; in fact he was a legend, an icon, as his songs, many speaking of real issues, related to them. Apartheid was happening and Rodriguez inspired a new way of thinking about the government; he inspired revolution. The amazing documentary, Searching for Sugarman chronicles his musical journey and his humble way of living. He never made money from his songs and only recently did he actually give a concert in South Africa to loads of die-hard fans. His story is truly inspiring and heartwarming.
Live Your Life (no, it's not T.I)
This woman: wow. I just love her. Why doesn't this song have more views? Only 1 million? Everyone needs to groove to its beats, and more importantly, its message.
"Find your light
Don't hide from what you are
And rise before you fall
And hope for something more
Live if you really want to..."

Back
I've been so MIA with this blog. I can't believe I allowed myself to break from it for so long. But on the bright side during that time I've discovered so much more music that we'll never hear on the airwaves. And this is the place where I plan to curate them all. I love all kinds of music as you'll see here. To be narrow-minded about music is the most absurd thing to me because music is the soul of life; it inspires everything from action and tears to forgotten memories and (as if often happens with me) artistic creation. We can all get something out of any genre if we just listen more closely.
